Within the SMARTWELD project (RFCS-2022, GA No. 101112414), WP6 – Integration & Validation at TRL5, led by JT, is advancing the transition of SMARTWELD technologies from laboratory development to full-scale industrial validation.
As part of the work led by L-IS, significant progress has been achieved in developing the Plasma Hybrid Welding (PHW)+ Metal Active Gas (MAG) welding system for 5G pipeline girth welding.
Recent achievements include:
- Establishment of the PHW+MAG welding strategy for API 5L X80 and API 5L X100 pipeline joints.
- Integration of the PHW process with MAG root-pass welding, building on developments from WP3.
- Design and construction of a dedicated 5G pipeline welding stand for full-scale girth welding.
- Preparation for full-scale welding trials using optimized welding parameters.
The accompanying images showcase the newly developed welding stand, which will support full-scale validation activities and the integration of hybrid welding technologies as the SMARTWELD project progresses towards TRL5.
