Within the SMARTWELD project (EU RFCS-2022, GA No. 101112414), WP5 – Development of a Predictive Tool at TRL4 continues to advance through the collaborative efforts of the project partners. As part of Task 5.3 – Algorithm Development, RINA Consulting – CSM S.p.A. has developed a thermo-mechanical finite element model (FEM) framework for simulating hybrid welding processes. Recent achievements include:
- Development of a coupled thermo-mechanical welding simulation framework.
- Implementation of hybrid heat source models and multi-pass welding capabilities.
- Development of both 2D and 3D FEM models to predict temperature evolution, microstructure, residual stresses, and welding-induced distortion.
The accompanying visuals show representative 2D and 3D simulation models, illustrating its capability to predict the thermal and mechanical response of hybrid welding processes. These developments provide a powerful numerical tool for understanding welding behaviour, optimizing welding procedures, and supporting the design of reliable and efficient hybrid welding technologies.
