Our Vision
At SMARTWELD, we envision a future where welding processes not only meet but surpass environmental and efficiency standards. By aligning with the European Green Deal and addressing key RFCS research objectives, we are dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in steel production.
Key Objectives
1. Integrated Welding System: Our primary objective is the development, validation, and diffusion of a smart integrated welding system. This system comprises new robotised/automated hybrid welding technologies, digital-twin-assisted online quality monitoring systems, and a predictive tool.
2. Validation and Market Reach: We aim to validate these integrated technologies at Technology Readiness Level 5 (TRL5) within our project timeframe. Beyond this, we plan activities to reach the market at TRL9 within 5 years post-project.
3. Scope Expansion: Starting with a specific business case, such as [U]HSS pipes, we aim to assess the transferability of results to other critical areas like hydrogen steels and heavy carpentry steels.
4. RFCS Research Objectives: SMARTWELD aligns with various RFCS research objectives, including the study of new advanced steel grades, predictive simulation models, technologies relating to forming, welding, and joining, standardization of testing and evaluation methods, and high-performance steels.
5. Contribution to the European Green Deal: We actively contribute to the European Green Deal by promoting the evolution of industrial processes toward innovative hybrid welding technologies, Industry 4.0, Internet of Things, big data analytics, deep learning, digital twins, and cyber-physical systems.
6. Reference Target: Our project sets specific targets, including saving machining time, reducing filler usage, saving energy, improving productivity, and enhancing structural integrity.
